After the basic hull shape is cut from the block as explained on the previous page, Creating a Solid Hull Ship Model 1, Templates based on the ship’s body plan must be used to shape the complex curves of the hull. Step-by-step details will be provided soon. Until then, here is a full size page of the templates we will use:
Do you think is possible doing it by hands, without using the saw?
It’s certainly possible to cut the hull block with a coping saw, sometimes called a keyhole saw, but it will take longer. You could even carve the block with a drawknife and spokeshave if you have lots of patience.
When will be able to manage to complete your tutorial Im finding it facinating and would love to make this model myself. Do you know any other step by step tutorials to make a ship from hull lines and a bloxck of wood?
Apologies for getting side-tracked on this project. A similar method is the bread-and-butter solid hull, described beginning here: https://www.themodelshipwright.com/construction-articles/building-a-bread-and-butter-solid-hull-ship-model/
Are plans available to build the a Doughty revenue cutter using the bread and butter method?
Thanks for visiting TheModelShipwright.com
The plans for Doughty are part of the Smithsonian Institute’s Chapelle collection. The individual plans, or lists of plans available can be ordered at http://americanhistory.si.edu/about/departments/work-and-industry/ship-plans
