Renamed USVAT Pvt. Frederick C. Murphy
Originally built as cargo ships, in the summer of 1945, 84 Victory ships were converted to troop ships in preparation for the invasion of the Japanese home islands. When the war ended without that invasion, the converted Victory ships were used to bring home American troops. [1]
In 1946, after the SS Maritime Victory had completed her tasks in repatriating American troops she was put in the reserve fleet and renamed the USVAT Pvt. Frederick C. Murphy in honor of the World War II Medal of Honor winner. [2]
